ENS & ESI Benefits
What is Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS)?
Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) is a short series of daily exercises for puppies, developed by the U.S. military to strengthen a dog’s long-term health and adaptability. From days 3–16 of life, each puppy experiences five quick activities:
Held upright
Held with the head pointed down
Held on their back
Gentle toe stimulation with a cotton swab
Placement on a cool surface
These small steps stimulate the neurological system, which can lead to:
Stronger cardiovascular health
Greater stress tolerance
Enhanced immune system
Improved learning ability
ENS is about building resilience, preparing puppies for life outside the whelping box.
What is Early Scent Introduction (ESI)?
Early Scent Introduction (ESI) focuses on stimulating a puppy’s incredible sense of smell. From days 3–16, each puppy is introduced to a new scent daily — such as grass, herbs, leather, or fruit. Their reactions are observed and noted.
Benefits of ESI include:
Increased brain development
Boosted curiosity and confidence
Better adaptability to everyday smells
A foundation for potential scent work (therapy, service, or hunting)
Even for family pets, ESI builds confidence and curiosity in exploring the world.
