Multigenerational Bernedoodles vs F1

If you're considering adding a Bernedoodle to your family, you’ve probably come across terms like F1, F1B, and multigenerational. While all Bernedoodles are adorable and intelligent, there are some big differences between first-generation (F1) and multigenerational Bernedoodles that can impact coat type, temperament, and allergy-friendliness. We are often asked if we raise F1 Bernedoodles and our answer is no. Here's why we prefer multigenerational doodles over F1s.

🧬 What Is a Multigenerational Doodle?

A multigenerational Bernedoodle is one whose parents are both Bernedoodles, typically bred over several generations. For example, an a multigenerational Bernedoodle may have a lineage that includes multiple generations of carefully selected Doodles.

This is different from an F1 Bernedoodle, which is a 50/50 mix of a purebred Poodle and a Bernese Mountain Dog.

✅ Benefits of Multigenerational Doodles

1. More Predictable Coat Types

One of the biggest reasons people choose multigen Doodles is for their coat.

  • F1 Bernedoodles can have a wide variety of coat types—from straight to wavy to curly—which means not all are hypoallergenic or low-shedding.

  • Multigenerational Bernedoodles are bred specifically for low-shedding, allergy-friendly coats. Breeders have greater control over coat texture, length, and maintenance needs.

2. Improved Allergy-Friendliness

If you or a family member has pet allergies, a multigen Bernedoodle is often the better choice.

  • With generations of selective breeding, multigen lines tend to produce more consistent non-shedding and hypoallergenic traits.

  • F1 Bernedoodles may still shed or produce dander that triggers allergies.

3. More Consistent Temperaments

Because multigen Bernedoodles are bred with temperament in mind:

  • They tend to be calmer, more focused, and easier to train than F1s.

  • Years of selective breeding allow breeders to emphasize desirable traits like gentle personalities, loyalty, and intelligence.

4. Better Suitability as Therapy or Service Dogs

Many multigenerational Bernedoodles are used in therapy and service work due to their predictability and temperament stability.

  • F1 Bernedoodles can make wonderful pets too, but they may have more variation in behavior depending on which parent breed they take after.

5. Lower Risk of Shedding Surprise

With F1 Bernedoodles, it’s hard to predict how much they’ll shed until they mature.

  • Multigen Bernedoodles, especially from experienced breeders, come with a higher likelihood of staying non-shedding their entire lives.

🐾 So, Which One Is Right for You?

F1 Bernedoodles can be a great fit for some families, especially those who don’t have allergies and enjoy a more “natural” coat look. But if you’re looking for:

  • A more predictable coat

  • A hypoallergenic companion

  • A dog with a consistent, friendly temperament

  • And less risk of surprise shedding...

Then a multigenerational Doodle is likely the best choice.
