AUSTRALIAN LABRADOODLE VS LABRADOODLE

AUSTRALIAN LABRADOODLE VS LABRADOODLE - IS THERE A DIFFERENCE?

They’re both Labradoodles so they can’t be that different, right? Actually they can! From their breed makeup to their coat type and personalities you will be surprised at just how different these two breeds can be.

WHAT IS A LABRADOODLE?

A Labradoodle, also referred to as an American Labradoodle is the combination of a Labradoodle Retriever and either a toy, mini, or standard Poodle. While there are some higher generation (3, F4, multigen) American Labradoodles, most are early generations (ie F1 or F1b) which tend to be quite inconsistent and more unpredictable in appearance, size, and temperament.

WHAT IS AN AUSTRALIAN LABRADOODLE?

First off, let me just get this out there because I know their name is confusing, but there is absolutely ZERO Australian Shepherd in an Australian Labradoodle! They originated in Australia which is how they got the “Australian” in their name. Depending on lineage, Australian Labradoodles can be a combination of 6 different breeds - Labrador, Poodle, English Cocker Spaniel, American Cocker Spaniel, Curly Coat Retriever, and Irish Water Spaniel. However, the most common breeds you will see in them now are the Labrador, Poodle, and American & English Cocker Spaniels. There is much more consistency in the Australian Labradoodle primarily due to the fact that they are further down the lines in generations.

WHAT MAKES THEM DIFFERENT?

CONSISTENCY

The Australian Labradoodle is more predictable that most Labradoodles due to the fact that they are further down in their generations and the further they get, the more predicable and consistent their physical characteristics and attributes become.

COAT

Since most Labradoodles are only a few generations away from the Labrador Retriever, it shouldn’t be a surprise that most tend to shed. Many have straight or wiry coats, though they can also have wavy or curly coat. The type of coat can vary greatly in each litter.

On the other hand, Australian Labradoodles are generally further away from their shedding parent breeds (Lab and Spaniels) and their coats have been developed over 30+ years and are extremely less likely to shed. Many early generation Labradoodles have a more scruffy look, while Australian Labradoodles look more like a teddy bear.

TEMPERAMENT

When it comes to temperament, both Labradoodles and Australian Labradoodles can make great family pets. They are smart, loyal, and eager to please. However, Labradoodles (especially early generations) tend to be more energetic and may require more mental and physical stimulation to keep them happy. In opposition, Australian Labradoodles are generally more easy going and calm but are also still playful!
